Tai Chi Chuan veut dire « Le poing du Tai Chi », ou « La Boxe du Tai Chi » .
Selon la légende, le Tai Chi Chuan a été créé par le moine Taoiste Zhang Sanfeng au XIIe siècle.
De la fenêtre sa hutte, il assista un jour au combat entre un serpent et une grue. Le serpent sortit vainqueur, grâce à ses mouvements souples et curvilignes; et le moine, expert en arts martiaux, décida de se baser dorénavant sur les atouts du serpent: souplesse, fluidité, mouvements ronds, alternance du plein et du vide, du Yin et du Yang, etc.
On reconnait dans le Tai Chi Chuan beaucoup de mouvements des plus anciennes formes du Kung Fu Shaolin. Mais ils ont été adaptés aux critères de circulation d’énergie (le Chi) venant de l’acupuncture et des autres formes de la médecine énergétique chinoise. Son ou ses créateurs étaient, de toute évidence, experts dans ces domaines.
Cette attention au bien-être et à la santé restera un des bénéfices majeurs de la pratique du Tai Chi.
Quoi qu’il en soit, le Tai Chi Chuan arrive au XIXe siècle comme un art gardé secret à l’intérieur de la seule famille Chen.
Yang Luchan (1789-1872) engagé comme serviteur par la famille Chen aurait, selon la légende, suivi à leur insu et pendant des années les entrainements nocturnes du clan. Démasqué, il montra une telle maitrise que Chen Changxing, le chef du Clan, décida qu’il méritait qu’on lui dévoile l’ensemble des secrets de la famille Chen.
Yang Luchan sera le créateur du style Yang, plus interne, plus simple et moins acrobatique que le style Chen.
Ses trois enfants poursuivirent la transmission de l’art appris de leur père, adoptant et explorant chacun certaines facettes de l’enseignement. Par la suite, le Tai Chi Chuan ne cessera jamais d’évoluer, chaque maître le développant en fonction de sa nature, ses intuitions et la profondeur de sa pratique,
en gardant néanmoins quelques principes de base communs à tous les styles de Tai Chi.
Cheng Man Ch’ing, un jeune médecin et peintre chinois, fut son disciple pendant plusieurs années. Il émigra à Taiwan à la fin de la guerre civile chinoise.
Il est à l’origine de l’enseignement transmis par Equilibre en Mouvement.
